Introduction

Inspiring the Purpose, Safety and Industry Standards through Visual Design

For this project, my client was an Air Navigation Student who wanted to create an airport luggage tracking app for their final thesis. With the structure of the app already elaborated, they needed a Visual Identity to associate with the app.

My role in this project was to create a logo and color palette that would reflect the client’s needs: inspire safety for the users, meet the industry visual standards, and easily reflect the purpose of the app.

Understanding the vision behind the project

Client Brief

To understand the vision behind the client’s project, I conducted a short meeting to discuss the project’s evolution and how the client perceives the integration of the logo and color palette in the project.

We did an overview of the general purpose of the app, analyzed the existing wireframes, and discussed with the developer what the future implementation would look like.

Discovering the guidelines for our logo: a safety, friendly, intuitive composition

Mood Board

To better understand the client’s vision of the app, I have asked them to come up with a few pictures that they believe would be representative of the concept of their airport luggage tracking app. This represented the basis of my mood board and helped me better understand the client’s vision: a friendly, yet safety-inspiring logo that would easily make you think about your next trip.

I then completed the mood board with the logos of the competitors and of the biggest companies in the air navigation industry. This uncovered the following industry trends: air travel companies focus on dark hues of blue in order to inspire safety and professionalism, while luggage tracking apps have a friendlier approach, with lighter tones, round edges logos, and a form of luggage at the basis of their logo.

Finally, the complete picture of the mood board created a pathway for the direction of our logo: a nicely integrated form (luggage, airplane, etc.) that would be intuitive regarding the purpose of the app, combining both safety-inspiring and friendly colors.

Inspiring Safety and Friendliness through Colors

Color Palette

After the creation of the mood board, a few patterns emerged that helped me with creating a Visual Identity for the app. Starting with the Color Palette, you can see my process below:

Hand-Drawn Sketches

Besides color, the mood board provided a great basis for the form of the logo, too. I first started to work on some hand-drawn sketches based on the objects associated with the purpose of the app: luggage bands, trollers, tags, and airplanes, along with some arrows that represent the idea of moving forward/traveling.

From Paper to Digital

Working on the Fonts and Form

After settling on the logotype that disguises a troller on a luggage band, I’ve started to test different fonts to see which one best accommodates the drawing. Together with the fonts, I added variations to the form of the luggage band as well, to see which combination would bring forward the message of the logo in the best way.

I chose sans serif font in order to represent an open and friendly brand. By testing different depth and calligraphy variations, we reached the font that would best represent the app: a friendly, yet safe solution for your traveling luggage.

The arrows combined with a full triangle disguise a luggage band while showing the symbol for ‘tracking’.

The T shows the handles of a troller that stays on the luggage band, as well as the wings of a plane or helicopter.

From B&W to Color

Color Palette Integration and Readability

Once we settled on the desired form, I tested for the best color combination from the created palette. The T forming a troller is always distinctive from the rest of the word, to help with reading the form better. The best version tested had a yellow T, that paired with the arrows below formed a luggage band.

After reaching the desired color combinations, I tested the readability of the ensemble, too and reach the best version with an AA score.

The Final Look: Illustrating Purpose through Form and Color

The final version of the logo illustrates a troller on the luggage band forming the word ‘Track’.

The blue and yellow combination represent the perfect balance between friendly and professional. The composition balances the two colors by each representing both one element from the name and one element from the luggage band. Both colors create a god contrast with the dark neutral chosen for the composition.

The B&W version is monochrome black and focuses on the form, illustrating the luggage on the band from which the T starts forming the word.

Both versions encompass perfectly the objectives for the look of this app: friendly, intuitive, safety-inspiring

Reflections on the process

Key Learnings

This project was a great opportunity to practice my client management abilities from my previous role as an Account Manager and apply them to my job as a Designer as well.

I had the chance to turn the vision of the client into reality and create the pillars for the visual identity of the application.

Working on a project for a very rigorous industry, such as the Air Navigation one, was a great chance for me to combine my creative skills with the standard practices from the industry.

Working with Ruxandra on my thesis application’s logo was a pleasure. Her innovative UX/UI skills and artistic touch shaped a standout visual identity. She provided invaluable insights and unwavering support, making complex design principles accessible and engaging.
